Autovitesse... paradise in Eindhoven
We met in 1994: Aldo Carrer, our collectioner friend, tells us that there's a chap in Holland who's got an Indian Four and that many have tried to buy that bike with absolutely no luck.
After quite a few telephone calls in french language made by our teacher (Claudia) we decided to take advantage of the fact that we would travel to the Super Rally in Holland and we went to meet this man.
The moment we arrived we were struck by the sight of his garage: more a storage place than a garage with everything and more inside. (the pix show clearly what we mean)
After the usual greetings we headed for the bikes passing through a long series of doors that he unlocked and locked immediately after we had stepped through. The thing was getting more and more interesting.
At last we arrived in sight of a frame with the wheels and the engine hardly kept together with a couple of screws: it was a Four Upside Down dating back to 1937.
It took almost three hours of complicated bargaining to get to the end and buy the bike, running the risk to be kicked off the garage at the first unappropriate word. And I can't really describe the satisfaction to get into the Super Rally area pushing that bike.
It hasn't taken a lot of time to become friends with the owner of the Autovitesse Garage in Eindhoven, indeed a unique person and any time we travel in the area we never miss the chance to homage him with a bottle of Sangiovese wine strictly original from our region.
If you behave, sooner or later, I'll take you along with me to meet him!
Sante.
